How to create a beautiful theory in Physics?
When I was in a Mathematics summer school in Dubna, Russia I remember some
professor (I think it was Tikhomirov) told us that if you want to create a
nice theory in Physics, you should do the following.
First, you have to forget all other Physical theories that you know.
Second, you should take some beautiful theory in Mathematics and find out
what can it explain in Physics.
So I am wondering now, is that true? I know there are examples of the
opposite influence. But do you know examples when some theories in
Mathematics actually gave new Physical theories?
Thank you!
