“amavisd”…, is it really necessary? [on hold]

"amavisd"…, is it really necessary? [on hold]

I'm configuring a web server (VPS, LAMP, CentOS), and I'm following a
tutorial to set it up and one of the services I've installed is "amavisd".
Honestly I did't know what is it for (something in mail I guess...).
I've noticed that it's a really memory consumer (about 270 MB). The
question: Do I really need it?
Thanks.
